If you’ve spent any time around the Blender community, you’ve probably heard of the famous doughnut tutorial by Andrew Price of Blender Guru. It’s practically a rite of passage for new Blender artists, and recently I decided to work through it myself.

My goal wasn’t necessarily to become a professional 3D artist overnight. Instead, I wanted to better understand the fundamentals of Blender, and re-acquaint myself with 3D. It’s been awhile for me (almost 20 years with the exception of a couple of items).

Over the course of the tutorial, I learned how to:

  • Navigate Blender’s interface and tools
  • Keyboard Shortcuts
  • Create and modify 3D geometry
  • Apply materials and textures
  • Work with lighting and cameras
  • Render finished scenes
  • Develop a stronger understanding of the 3D production pipeline

The renderings below represent my progress through the tutorial. While there are certainly areas I could continue refining, I’m pleased with the results and, more importantly, with what I learned throughout the process.

With the doughnut now behind me, I’m looking forward to moving on to more challenging Blender projects and continuing to expand my skills in interactive design, visualization, and digital storytelling.

Sometimes the best way to learn something new is simply to start—and in Blender, that often starts with a doughnut.
